It all started with a single gift. Bunny and I got dad a pool table for Father’s Day. Then, Bunny got him a jukebox for Valentine’s Day with all of their favorite songs programmed in it. Then, the recliner came from Aunt Janice, a pinball machine from the Napiers, and so on and so on. Before we even knew what we had done, the Dad Loft had been born.

“Let me turn the heat up, and then I’ll give you a tour.” I jogged to the gas fireplace and clicked it on. When I turned to look at Opal, she was smiling and looking around, taking in all of the little nicknacks on the walls and mismatched pieces of furniture.

“So this is my dad’s thinking place. All of the photographs are Aunt Janice’s work, of course. The jukebox works. Over here, “I stepped into the room a little further, “is the bathroom, and this is an office slash library. And, here,” I said, pushing through the saloon doors, “is the kitchenette.”

She took her hands out of her pockets and started removing her gloves.

“What do you think?” I asked.

“This is great. I feel like I understand your dad a little more now.”

She walked back toward the French doors dropping her coat, gloves, and scarf on the brown leather sofa. She slid her hand over the mother of pearl inlay on the pool table.

“Do you play?” I asked.

“I did when I was in college.”

I removed my winter gear and reached inside the mini-fridge for a couple of dark beers. I popped the caps and offered one to Opal. “Up for a game?”
